Rock Is Dead, but It Won't Lie Down

If you liked these Austin-based fellas last winter at the Blue Moon, where they battled both the chill night air and the absence of their lone female member, you'll love their disc, which not only adds indoor acoustics to their loose, country-rooted folk-blues but also restores the female member to her rightful place as lead singer on two songs. Although the group takes its name from Bob Dylan's first gospel album, the overall feel is what Adam Duritz and Counting Crows might generate if they were cast as Dylan and the Band respectively in a film called Sex, Lies, and Basement Tapes. Good news for Crows stoners: Adoniram Lipton sings better than Adam Duritz. Rating: Four best cellars out of five.

Slowtrain - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth

With a name like Slowtrain, you would assume that brothers Adoniram and Joshua Lipton are somewhat influenced by Bob Dylan. While assumptions of that type are dangerous, especially in the music world, in this case you would be correct. Based out of Austin, Texas, Slowtrain creates an album in Escape the Sun that falls into that loose collective of "Americana/alt.country/roots/folk" music. Call it what you will - simply put, this is some good stuff.
