Rain's picture
  • Age: 37
  • Location: Tempe, Arizona, United States of America

Once upon a time there was a Mermaid named Rain who lived in her own musical world. She lived in the cool ocean waters of San Francisco where music was the only language. In this perfect environment Rain would sing and play to her hearts content, while the whales played back up and the coral cooked up some pretty great beats.

One day she met a prince and she fell madly in love with him. She followed him to his castle in the f*ing hot desert of Phoenix (a mermaid in the desert???). Unfortunately, she had to give up her musical world and was stripped of her fins. She was forced to learn the human language (which was harder for her to communicate in than her own musical one). A small price it seemed at the time. And for a time she was happy living in this romantic dream (the travel, the food, the festive holidays, the laughter, the joy....). The only time she was reminded of her home in the sea was when they stopped in for a bowl of cioppino. But, she DID miss the music greatly. There was a time when she had dreamed that her music would one day make it's way from the sea and be heard by the rest of the world. It seemed to her that the desert had dried all that up.

Eventually, the prince grew tired of her. He banished her from his kingdom. Not allowed to go back to her home in the sea she was forced to live on the streets. She felt sad, abandoned and really did not know what to do. She slept in hospitals, abandoned parking lots... wherever she could find.

One day she was making her bed in a park when she came upon a giant wolf. His imposing figure made her scream louder than she had ever screamed before. So, loud that she was no longer sad because, she was to busy being scared.

The wolf smirked and said, "Are you finished, because you know, I can wait?"

He said," You may be scared but I think the real thing to fear, is never playing music again. Are you going to die with this music inside? Isn't that more scary!"

He went on, "So, you don't have the coral making beats or the whales for back-up...you can do this on your own!"

She realized immediately that he was right!

Music haunted her, always. There was always a song in her head and a melody on her lips. The wolf promised to stay with her to provide inspiration when she needed it. To let her know when she was being distracted back into her fantasyland. If she was living a fairytale it may have been an enchanted one, but it also had been pretty fucked up. Sometimes the prince can be the asshole and the wolf isn't so big and bad after all.

So, she set out on her journey and made her album to tell this "fairytale", but also to tell some of the ones she wanted to forget (but, that others might relate to). And that journey became it's own fucked up enchanted fairytale.

The Deadliest Fairytales

Hey girlie, glad to see you made your way over to the rest of us malcontents. This has all the shapings of a really great site, but I'm not sure it has the flow quite yet. It's definitely a very social site, which that other site now sorely lacks, but I wonder if the music takes a backseat...hmmm, if only there were a happy medium... kinda like the old 61 :) Keep your fingers crossed.

There is a lot of stuff I might like even better than the t-61 .But yeah, It does need a better flow and I think maybe it might be easier to uncover the good new stuff!

    Discovering Music
    Left by PaulNZ, on Jan 30, 2010 - 23:46
Rain: 'I 'm wondering .. if it's as easy to "discover" good new music?'

Hmm, there are certainly different ways of doing all sorts of things here, so it may be a matter of learning ways to Discover :)

On the Homepage (yes, Uvumi has a homepage!) a random playlist is displayed, so you can discover 'Found' music (i.e. someone else has discovered it first..) There is also Featured Artists, though again these are vetted. And there is a list of Recently Uploaded songs.

Keeping an eye on the Network Updates will show you what your Favourite Artists have recently uploaded, and what your friends have Discovered (and Favourited) (also on Homepage).

You can search for Songs including Tags, e.g. a search for 'Chill'. (Search is for 'People' by default, so don't forget to click the button before the search bar to change it to 'Song' :)

Hope there's a helpful idea in there :S Uvumi is developing all the time (thanks Team!), so you can make a suggestion, or someone else will :D Enjoy

Ahh, further 'official' word on Music Discovery: the recommendation is use of the Charts (but this is only music that is hitting the bigtime DX).
Further they say: "we all feel like Uvumi needs better music discovery tools, and we are working on improving that area of the site"..
So .. make suggestions, good luck charms, and more of your beautiful music :D

I appreciate the overview of the site. It seems now I have a little more time to explore a bit. After a bit of exploration I might no better about what to suggest! Thanks also for the good luck charms . Much better than "Lucky Charms" which makes me sick! ;)
