    We were talking about "covers"
    Left by Yardbird, on Mar 13, 2010 - 22:10
a coupla weeks ago. I see from ThomasAD3 that uvumi frowns on cover tunes, so I won't request any. But I have to tell you, I loved your version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Before I listened to it, I wasn't sure an acoustic version would work, but you gave it real drive.

Thank you very much. I like playing LWTUA with the Bossa Nova beat and have been playing it this way for many years..
I don't know if Uvumi frowns on covers but they sort of "don't want to know about them" if you post them on the site..
I asked Marshall about this early on.

    Thanks for the request!
    Good to know you.

I noticed Swans in your influences.
Did you ever catch 'em live?

No.. can't say that I ever saw them live. I probably hadn't even heard of them during their heyday anyway. But they are tremendous band, I love how they could make great songs out of repeating 1-2 chords..
And M. Gira made an awesome song out of (basically) 1 chord recently..

But seriously, they are a band that knew how to maximize their strengths and created a unique sound. And they started out rough but ended up making such beautiful music..

Did you see them? I guess there were shows that were so loud, it was hazardous to one's health + hearing.

        Swans
        Left by geronimodeleon, on Mar 1, 2010 - 20:46
I saw them late period at the (now defunkt) Dingo Bar in Albuquerque in the early to mid 90's.
They toured with an interesting percussion setup which included vibes...
it a was beautifully intense and fulfilling performance.
Jarboe seemed like she was ill, though her performance was amazing.

If you haven't already heard them, you might enjoy The World of Skin side projects.
My favorite of the two releases is 10 Songs for Another World. Also, though Gira lists it as one of his least favorite works, I do enjoy Burning World.

I have't spent much time with Gira's his solo work, or with the Angels of Light projects,
though I like what I've heard.

        Loud Swanss
        Left by geronimodeleon, on Mar 1, 2010 - 20:52
Oh... it was loud, but not anymore than most other shows I've attended. I expect if I'd seen 'em during the Children of God era I might have a different report : )
